Esta cache irá te convidar a conhecer parte da Estrada Regional 101. 

A Estrada Regional (ER) número 101 (ER101), com 205 km de extensão, merece especial destaque por ser uma obra de engenharia notável, realizada com os meios limitados da época, que só encontra paralelo na extraordinária rede de levadas construída ao longo dos séculos. Foi concluída a 6 de junho de 1958, com a inauguração do túnel Boa Ventura/Arco de São Jorge. Na passagem para o séc. XXI, encontra-se sem circulação rodoviária principal, mas está ainda na lembrança de muitos madeirenses e turistas o percurso vertiginoso da estrada escarpada na rocha da costa norte, desde São Vicente ao Porto Moniz. A sua imagem ficou gravada em muitos postais madeirenses.

Ao longo dos 3km (ida e volta) irás conhecer os problemas e ao mesmo a beleza desta outrora importante estrada. 

Este percurso deverá ser feito com boas condições metereológicas. Evita os dias de chuva e vento.

No início o percurso é acessível, tendo apenas uma área mais sensível após o túnel de acesso à Ribeira Funda.

This cache will invite you to visit the Regional Road 101.

The Regional Road (ER) number 101 (ER101), with 205 km of extension, deserves special mention because it is a remarkable engineering work carried out with the limited means of the time, that only finds parallel in the extraordinary network of "levadas" constructed along the centuries. It was completed on June 6, 1958, with the inauguration of the Boa Ventura / Arco de São Jorge tunnel. In the early XXI century, it longer has main road traffic, but it is still in the memory of many Madeirans and tourists the dizzying route of the steep road on the rock of the north coast, from São Vicente to Porto Moniz. Its image was engraved on many Madeiran postcards.

Along the 3km (round trip) you will discover the problems and at the same time the beauty of this once important road.

This course should be done with good weather conditions. Avoid the rainy and windy days.

At the beginning the route is accessible, having only a more sensitive area after the access tunnel to Ribeira Funda.

GALINHAÇA
Vereda da Cavaca - Cabeço das Moitadinhas - Ribeira da Galinhaça

Esta cache irá te convidar a conhecer a Vereda da Cavaca.
A cache está colocada no cruzamento entre a Vereda Cavaca e a Ribeira da Galinhaça a cerca de 750m de altitude.
Durante a época de chuvas poderás observar uma das cascatas desta ribeira. No verão terá um caudal muito reduzido.
Poderás iniciar o percurso no Chão da Ribeira (360m de altitude) ou no Fio - Fanal (1150m).
Poderás também efectuar um percurso circular e encontrar mais algumas caches utilizando o Caminho das Voltas.

This cache will invite you to visit the Vereda da Cavaca.

The cache is placed at the intersection between Vereda Cavaca and Ribeira da Galinhaça at about 750m altitude.

During the rainy season you can observe one of the waterfalls of this water stream. In summer it will have a very reduced flow.

You can start the course at Chão da Ribeira (360m altitude) or at Fio - Fanal (1150m).

You can also make a circular route and find some more caches using the Caminho das Voltas.

RIBEIRA DOS CEDROS

 A Ribeira dos Cedros é a nascente da Levada das 25 fontes. Para cá chegar basta seguir a levada devidamente sinalizada.

Apesar de não ter a beleza da sua vizinha Ribeira da Água Negra, estes 500m que as separam são geralmente feitos sem que se encontrem visitantes. 

É aqui também que começa o Canyon da Ribeira dos Cedros. Um dos percursos de canyoning mais acessíveis deste vale e que conduz o praticante até a Levada da Rocha Vermelha ou até mesmo à Ribeira da Janela. A sua maior cascata tem apenas 25m. 

No local poderam ser observados fenomenos geologicos interessantes e os mais aventureiros poderão subir alguns patamares e explorar um pouco mais.

O sinal GPS será fraco, utilize o spoiler.

Ribeira dos Cedros is the source of the 25 Fountains Levada. To get here just follow the 25 Fontes trail properly signposted. 

Despite not having the beauty of its neighboring Ribeira da Água Negra, these 500m separating them are usually made without encountering any more visitors.

It is also here where the Canyon da Ribeira dos Cedros begins. One of the most accessible canyoning routes in this valley that leads the practitioner to the Levada da Rocha Vermelha or even to the Ribeira da Janela. Its biggest waterfall is only 25m.

Onsite you can observe interesting geological phenomena and the more adventurous can climb some levels and explore some more.

Ribeira do Alecrim - Levada do Furado Velho

O pitoresco lugar do Rabaçal fica situado no interior da ilha, numa altitude de mil metros acima do nível do mar. As águas aproveitadas no Rabaçal para a alimentação das levadas, são constituídas pelas fontes originárias da Ribeira da Janela. 

Certamente que desde os tempos primitivos da colonização devia aquela região ter atraído as atenções dos primeiros povoadores, não só do ponto de vista das belezas naturais, mas ainda e principalmente, da riqueza daqueles ubérrimos caudais, que corriam inutilmente para o oceano. 

Tem-se por vezes afirmado que datam do domínio filipino as primeiras tentativas feitas para o aproveitamento das águas do Rabaçal para irrigação, mas não existe qualquer documento ou informação de origem segura que inteiramente o confirme. Quando no ano de 1835, se iniciaram os trabalhos de construção, encontraram-se videntes vestígios de antigas explorações que, segundo as mais acertadas probabilidades, devem remontar-se ao terceiro quartel do século XVIII. 

Devemos fixar aqui uma data memorável na história das obras do Rabaçal — a de 16 de Setembro de 1855 — em que as águas atravessando pela primeira vez o túnel das Estrebarias, passaram do norte para o sul da ilha a fertilizar vastos terrenos que se achavam incultos. 

No decurso das obras, cuja realização levou mais de meio século, sofreram elas várias modificações. Para conduzi-las ao seu termo final, despendeu-se a avultada soma de quase 186 contos de réis, mas o grandioso empreendimento aí está a testar eloquentemente o que valem o zelo, a dedicação e o amor de alguns homens pelas prosperidades e bem estar da nossa terra. 

São duas as levadas do Rabaçal - a levada velha e a levada nova. As obras da levada velha só acabaram em 1860 e as da levada nova só ficaram definitivamente concluídas em 1890. Esta última levada é alimentada pelas águas das 25 Fontes e Fonte do Cedro (Ribeira dos Cedros).

Com a utilização da levada nova, a Levada do Furado Velho deixou de ser utilizada e caiu no esquecimento.

This scenic location named Rabaçal is located inside the island, at an altitude of a thousand meters above sea level. The water used in Rabaçal for feeding the levadas, is taken from the sources that form Ribeira da Janela.

Since the earliest days of colonization the region probably attracted the attentions of the first settlers, not only from the point of view of its natural beauty, but also and mainly due to the fertile streams that ran uselessly to the ocean.

Some state that the first attempts to use the waters from Rabaçal for irrigation date back from the Philippine Reign, but there is no document or information that securely confirms this origin entirely. When the construction works started in 1835, traces of ancient constructions were found and according to the more probable estimates, they may be traced back to the third quarter of the eighteenth century.

We fix here a memorable date in the history of Rabaçal - September 16th, 1855 - when the waters crossed for the first time the Estrebarias Tunnel, going from the north to the south of the island to fertilize vast grounds that were uncultivated. 

During the works, which took more than half a century, there were several changes. To finish the levada, they spent a large sum, but the great enterprise is still here to eloquently test the zeal, dedication and love of some men for the prosperity and well-being of our land.

There are two levadas in Rabaçal: the old and the new. The works of the old levada ended only in 1860 and the new levada were only finally completed in 1890. The new levada is fed by the waters from 25 Fontes and Fonte do Cedro (Ribeira dos Cedros).

With the use of the new levada, the old levada was no longer used and was forgotten.

CACHE

A cache está localizada perto do início da Levada do Furado Velho, na ponte sobre a Ribeira do Alecrim. 

Esta ribeira é um dos cursos de água utilizados para a prática de canyoning. 

Poderás continuar a percorrer a Levada até o seu final na cache "Túnel das Estrebarias" e subida até a cache "Ponto". 

The cache is located near the beginning of the Levada do Furado Velho, in the bridge over the Ribeira do Alecrim (Rosemary River). 

This river is one of the watercourses used to practice canyoning. 

You can continue along the Levada to its final in the "Túnel das Estrebarias" and climb to the cache "Ponto".

Os segredos do Rabaçal

O Rabaçal é uma das áreas mais procuradas pelos turistas por oferecer vários trilhos interligados e vários pontos de interesse. A cascata do Risco de 120m e a cascata das 25 fontes são dois dos principais pontos de interesse nos percursos pedestres da área do Rabaçal. Com esta cache pretendo mostrar dois locais onde se podem ter perspectivas diferentes destas duas bonitas cascatas.

Rabaçal is one of the most sought areas by tourists because it offers various interconnected trails and various points of interest. The Risco waterfall with 120m and  the 25 fountains waterfall with 65m are two of the main points of interest in the footpaths of the Rabaçal area. With this cache I intend to show two places where you can have different perspectives of these two beautiful waterfalls.


STAGE 1 - POÇO DO RISCO (120m)

Para chegar até esta área deverás seguir pelo percurso das 25 fontes, passar a ponte, subir as escadas e ao chegar à pequena casa das águas, virar para a pequena levada que vai buscar água à cascata do Risco.
Segue essa levada até à madre e responde à seguinte pergunta:

To reach this area you should follow the 25 Fontes route, pass the bridge, up the stairs till you reach the small water house. Then turn right to the little levada (water channel) that gets water from the Risco waterfall.
Follow this levada till its origin and answer the following question:

Olha para o Risco. Na margem direita, a construção possui qual destas formas geométricas?
Facing Risco, on the right bank, there is a concrete structure. Which is its geometrical form?

FINAL STAGE - CASCATA DA ÁGUA NEGRA (70m)

Agora que já tens as coordenadas finais, volta para o trilho principal para as 25 fontes. Após alguns metros, encontra o pequeno trilho à direita (waypoint e spoiler). Pouco depois da subida, irás encontrar um local com uma boa panorâmica. Após este pequeno intervalo, continua a tua caminhada e começa a procurar um trilho menos marcado à direita (waypoint). Tem atenção que o sinal GPS começa a ser mais fraco. Este trilho está pouco marcado e será fácil perder o seu rasto. Em certos locais poderá ser necessário um pouco de improviso. O trilho termina na margem direita da Ribeira da Água Negra. Continua sempre em frente e sobe mais um pouco sempre pela direita. Quando estiveres perante a cascata, procura o spoiler e a cache.

Now that you have the final coordinates, go back to the 25 fountains trail. After a few meters, go to the small trail to the right (waypoint and spoiler). Shortly after the climb, you will find a place with a good panoramic view. After this short break, continue your walk and begin looking for a less marked trail to your right (waypoint). Be aware that the GPS signal begins getting weaker. This trail is poorly marked and it will be easy to lose your track. In some places a little improvisation may be necessary. The trail ends on the right bank of the Ribeira da Água Negra. Keep going up and climb using the trail on the right. When you stand before the waterfall, look for the spoiler and cache.

CACHE:

Esta multi é composta por 3 etapas + final.
Em cada etapa encontrarás um número. Faz as contas e encontrarás a coordenada da etapa seguinte.
Os últimos metros até ao estacionamento são feitos numa estrada de terra. Se preferires poderás deixar o carro antes da ponte e andar mais um pouco.
Para começar entra nas coordenadas indicadas (ver spoiler) e logo encontrarás a levada. Segue a levada até a parte traseira do viveiro de trutas. Aí, terás de subir. O início do trilho é pouco perceptível (ver spoiler).

This multi comprises 3 stages + Final.
In each stage you will find a number. Do the math and you will find the coordinates to the next stage.
The last meters till the parking coordinates are made in a gravel road. If you prefer you can leave the car before the bridge and walk a little more.
To begin enter at the given coordinates (see spoiler) and then you will find the led. Follow the brought up to the back of the trout farm. Then you have to climb. The beginning of the trail is barely noticeable (see spoiler).

Here you'll be in the middle of the long Canyon das Lajinhas. Before reaching the creek, you will pass by steel cables. There, check the status of the tree log before you put your feet. Search for the cache in the left margin.
