Few people knows it but it is true.
Everyone associates whale fishing to Caniçal but the first "factory" existed at the mouth of Ribeira da Janela and not in Caniçal.
The installation of the first "factory" in Madeira took place in 1940 with the arrival of the first whalers to Madeira and the first whaleboats coming from the Azores and the construction of a "traiol" (name given to rudimentary processing stations, which allowed the extraction oil by means of large pots, put on direct heat. These stations were often deprived of animal beaching ramps) located east of the mouth of the Ribeira da Janela, in the municipality of Porto Moniz.

In 1942 one more "traiol" was built, this time in Canico, specifically in the pebble beach of Garajau, this construction was intended to increase the productive capacity and in a few years led to the abandonment of the first.
The game peaked in the islands in the 50s and 60s, with the full operation of the aforementioned plants.
Since 1986, the Regional Legislative Decree No. 6/86/M made the waters around the archipelago, up to 200 miles in a kind of sanctuary for whales, dolphins and other marine mammals including the rare monk seal .
From these times in Ribeira da Janela few remnants remain. Only the whales lookout and the path that gives access to it in Porto Moniz. The lookout is strategically located in order to observe the largest area of sea. It was, in other times, the site chosen for the observation of the passage of cetaceans.
When a whale was seen, the man in the lookout emitted signals to the Port and the fishermen immediately left for their catch. The whale was then towed to the pebble beach in Ribeira da Janela and quartered. The cooking to get the oil was to made with wood from the mountains of Ribeira da Janela and carried by people of Ribeira da Janela that took some profit of that economic activity.
There are also still traces (few) of the old "factory." In addition to the oral memories of old men who remember the "factory", some lands by the sea (especially in Contreiras, Quebrada do Mar and Enseada) used to make stakes out of whale bones to support the vines trellis.
The vertebrae of whales were used for kitchen stools.

At the end of the 40s the construction of the factory in Caniçal was started, which replaced the"traiol" in Garajau. This construction has increased the productive capacity of the Whaling Company of Madeira, because it was a plant much more modern and better equipped.

1 no Bugio e 2 no Porto Santo.
The success of this activity was based on building a network of lookouts who were placed high in coastal areas, allowing a full coverage of the coast of Madeira, as well as a partial coverage of the seas of Desertas and Porto Santo. Thus the island of Madeira had eight lookouts, one of them in Pico da Cruz (In the RG3 military complex in São Martinho) and one in Ponta do Garajau (Below the statue of Christ in Caniço). This network was completed with two lookouts in Deserta Grande one in Bugio and two in Porto Santo. These buildings gave shelter to the men who scanned the sea in search of "espartos" (term imported from the Azores, to designate the characteristic breath of large cetaceans).

In the seventies, with the growing international movement to defend the whales, there was a ban on marketing of products derived from these animals by some countries, which until then were the main buyers of Madeira production, including the United States of America, England and France. This prohibition led to the voluntary end of whaling in the archipelago, which ceased in 1981.
