Zimbreiros

Esta cache irá te levar à Ladeira dos Zimbreiros, uma das maiores e mais antigas do concelho da Calheta. Este percurso foi, durante anos, das poucas ligações entre a freguesia da Fajã da Ovelha e a do Paúl do Mar. É um velho caminho calcetado que, em ziguezague, desce a encosta até à foz da Ribeira das Galinhas, ali mesmo junto ao mar.
O Miradouro do Fio é um local privilegiado para desfrutar a paisagem oeste da vila do Paul do Mar. O nome advém de no miradouro ter sido instalado noutros tempos um Fio de Carga, que servia para transportar mercadorias que abasteciam a freguesia da Fajã, evitando assim que as pessoas subissem a íngreme ladeira com enormes cargas às costas.
Felizmente, o antigo Fio e as ruínas do armazém que o mantinha, estão relativamente preservados, o que aumenta em muito o valor do Miradouro.Começando a descer a Ladeira dos Zimbreiros o Miradouro fica a 10 minutos de distância, mas para aqueles que têm mais tempo, capacidade física e gostam de caminhadas aconselha-se a descida pela Ladeira até à Vila do Paúl do Mar, sem duvida um percurso muito bonito e agradável.
Muitos outros motivos vai encontrar para muitas paragens. Olhando para o alto vai poder ver os poios recortados que espreitam de lá de cima, dos Prazeres. Continuando, os pouco mais de 2 quilómetros que permitem ultrapassar o desnível de cerca de 350 metros podem tornar-se cansativos, mas valem bem a pena. A população local tem como tradição efectuar esta descida por altura do S. Amaro.
A vegetação que encontra ao longo da descida dos Zimbeiros inclui-se na chamada vegetação típica do litoral. Além das plantas introduzidas, vai poder encontrar alguns exemplares de Cila-da-Madeira (Autonoe madeirensis), que nesta altura do ano poderão exibir, ainda, as suas 'espigas' roxas que despertam a curiosidade dos passantes.
This cache will take you to the Zimbreiros Slope, one of the largest and oldest in the municipality of Calheta. This route was, for years, one of the very few links between the Fajã da Ovelha and Paúl do Mar. It is an old paved road that zigzags down the slope to the mouth of the Ribeira das Galinhas, right there by the sea.
Early on in the descent, we can find one of the highlights of this route, the Fio (Wire) Viewpoint.
The Fio Viewpoint is a prime location to enjoy the west landscape of the village of Paúl do Mar. The name comes from the cargo mechanism that was once installed on the viewpoint, which served to transport goods that supplied the village of Fajã da Ovelha, thus avoiding people go up the steep hill with huge loads on their backs.
Fortunately, the old wire and the ruins of the warehouse used for maintenance, are relatively preserved, which greatly increases the value of this viewpoint. Starting down the Slope of Zimbreiros the viewpoint is only 10 minutes away, but for those who have more time, are physicaly capable and enjoy hiking it is advisable to descent this trail till the village of Paúl do Mar, undoubtedly a very nice and pleasant route.
You will find many other reasons for a lot of stops. Looking upward you will be able to see the terraces used by farmers peeking from above, in Prazeres. Continuing, the just over 2 kilometers that allow overcoming the unevenness of 350 meters can become tiresome, but are well worth it. The local tradition is to do this descent during the Saint Amaro festivities.
The vegetation found along the descent of Zimbeiros is included in the so called typical coastal vegetation. Besides the introduced plants, you will be able to find some specimens of Scylla-of-Madeira (Autonoe madeirensis) that at this time of year can display also their purple flowers that attract the curiosity of passersby.

A Achada Grande, área aplanada no meio da vertente declivosa da margem esquerda da Ribeira do Porco, corresponde a uma terra bastante fértil que guarda um aglomerado populacional muito reduzido.
Achada Grande, flattened area in the middle of the slope of the left bank of the Ribeira do Porco, is a highly fertile land that holds a very small population cluster.
Uma curta vereda liga-nos à Levada da Achada Grande ou Levada Nova, assim chamada por ter entrado em funcionamento em 1960. Esta vai buscar água à Ribeira dos Moinhos, principal curso da freguesia da Boaventura, para irrigar as terras até à Achada da Madeira, lá para os lados do Lombo do Urzal.
A walking path connects us to the Levada da Achada Grande or Levada Nova (the new levada), so named because it started operating in 1960. This irrigation chanel draws water from the Ribeira dos Moinhos, the main course of Boaventura, to irrigate the lands till Achada Madeira, in the deep valey of Lombo do Urzal.
Iniciamos o nosso percurso a pé no sentido contrário ao das águas e, contornando o sítio do Pastel, aos poucos, mergulhamos em núcleos de espécies da antiga floresta da Laurissilva envolvidos por espécies introduzidas tais como pinheiros, incenseiros e bananilhas. Estas últimas assumem um carácter infestante.
We start our journey on foot in the opposite direction of the water, bypassing the area known as Pastel and gradually entering in a nucleus of species of the ancient laurel forest surrounded by introduced species such as pines, "incenseiros" (Pittosporum undulatum) and "bananilha" (Hedychium gardnerianum). The latter assumes an infesting character.
Os exóticos brincos de princesa, do género científico Fuchsia, de flores vermelhas, adornam os taludes sobranceiros à levada. Ao chegarmos à madre de água, no Curral Ganhão, temos a sensação de entrarmos num paraíso. Aqui a água brota da ribeira e de uma cascata por entre um floresta densa dominada por tis, loureiros, vinháticos e seixeiros.
The exotic Earrings-of-princess (Fuchsia corymbiflora) of red flowers adorn the slopes that overlook the levada. As we come to the levada's origin, in Curral Ganhão, we have the feeling of entering into paradise. Here the water flows from the creek and from a waterfall amidst the dense forest dominated by tis (Ocotea foetens), laurels, vinháticos (Persea indica) and seixeiros (Salix canariensis).

Esta multi cache irá te conduzir ao longo da levada.
O stage 1 encontra-se no vale da Ribeira do Porco. Neste stage encontrarás um número. Efectua os cálculos necessários e terás as coordenadas para a etapa final que irá se situar já no vale da Ribeira dos Moinhos. Para passar de um vale para o outro irás atravessar um pequeno túnel que geralmente apresenta uma boa iluminação natural pelo que a utilização de lanterna é não é obrigatório.
A levada não têm grande dificuldade de terreno mas não possui protecções e apresenta algumas zonas escorregadias decorrentes da queda de água no percurso, pelo que a utilização de um impermeável é recomendada. O regresso efectua-se pelo mesmo caminho.

Perform the necessary calculations and you will have the coordinates for the final stage which will be located in the valley of Ribeira dos Moinhos. To move from one valley to another you will go through a little tunnel that usually has good natural light, so the use of flashlight is not required.
This levada does not have a high difficulty terrain but has no protections and has some slippery areas due to the fall of water in the path, so the use of a raincoat is recommended. Return using the same path.
