Farol

The lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo is located in the municipality of Calheta, in the western most tip of the island of Madeira.
It has a square tower of masonry with 14 meters high and an annexe building. The height of the base is about 312m high.
The lamp emits three white flashes with a period of 20 seconds, reaching 26 miles(+-48km).

Ponta do Pargo - Nome curioso!
Ponta do Pargo (Bream's Tip) - curious name! It seems that when getting around the rocky piece of land that falls steeply on the blue-green sea, in the west of Madeira, the first navigators and settlers, including the Garcia da Câmara, João Gonçalves Zarco's son-in-law, fished here one of the most abundant fish of these Atlantic waters, the sea bream.

And thus was born, on top of an imposing cliff overlooking the sea, Ponta do Pargo, parish of Calheta municipality, located in a vast plain of 22km2 area. Marked by its charm, the silent and calm and the hospitality of its one thousand inhabitants, Ponta do Pargo is an attractive village where a lighthouse stands in the middle of the green plain and typical small town buildings, a beacon: the Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse.

Located on the Ponta da Vigia, which lies 300m in the sea cliff, the lighthouse became operational in 1922. Over the years the lighthouse has undergone improvements, and was electrified with power from the public network in 1989. Ten years later it was classified as a cultural heritage site, having, since 2001, a small but very interesting museological center .

Green Bunker
Ilha - GREEN BUNKER - Ilha ()
We start in Ilha, who was established as a parish in 1989, belonging to the municipality of Santana. It covers an area of 1500 hectares, bounded by the parishes of São Jorge, Santana and the division of counties Câmara de Lobos and Santana, established on the summit of Pico Ruivo.
Park your car in the given coordinates (N 32 ° W 016 ° 48 352 54 683) and start by visiting the viewpoint that is in the area, through which you can see the entire parish of Ilha.
To reach the cache you have to go through several small and steep trails that intersect with dirt roads. Always choose the paths because they are more beautiful. Another trick is to follow the signs for "Pico Ruivo".
Continuamos a subir.
Our journey starts through some houses and some cultivated land and others uncultivated.
Continuing to go up you'll be leaving civilization little by little and some of the human presence will only be marked in a few cattle barns.
The views over Santana and Achada Gramacho are superb. Continue to climb.
Continuamos a subir.
Numa destas veredas encontrarás a cache.
The upward track is magical. The walls, covered with moss, make us think that we are in an enchanted path. The silence is only interrupted by our footsteps. Contemplation is intense. We must inspire all that peace. Continue to climb.
In one of these paths you will find the cache.
At this altitude you will find an indigenous forest of Madeira - Laurel Forest, located in an fog area, between 1200 and 400m in altitude. This forest is especially important because the water from the fog condenses on the leaves of the plants and when it reaches the ground, recharges the springs and streams.
It is also likely to see the Bisbis (Regulus ignicapus madeirensis), the smallest of the birds that inhabites Madeira and also the curious Tentilhão (Fringilla coelebs) which easily approaches hikers. With some attention, you may spot the Pombo trocaz (Columba trocaz trocaz), flying through the deepest valleys, dominated by the laurel forest.
If you opt to continue to climb, you'll reach the Vale da Lapa and the crossing which may lead you to the following places: Queimadas, Pico Ruivo, Caldeirão Verde e Caldeirão do Inferno.

Caldeirão do Inferno
Queimadas - Caldeirão Verde - CALDEIRÃO DO INFERNO - Queimadas (16km)

A nossa aventura começa nas Queimadas (N 32° 47.017 W 016° 54.387). Estaciona ai o teu carro e segue a levada.
Our adventure begins in Queimadas (N 32° 47.017 W 016° 54.387). Park your car there and follow the levada.
Along the way you have several tunnels (the largest with 200 m) therefore the flashlight is mandatory. You can also observe various plants, geological formations and enjoy wonderful views over Santana and São Jorge.
After a visit to Caldeirão Verde, you must return to the levada and continue to Caldeirão do Inferno. This final section of the levada presents various areas without protection so you will need some extra caution.
At a certain point is necessary to descend to the bottom of a depression where a small waterfall once poured, now run dry because the waters were taken by a levada that originates above Caldeirão Verde and that supplies the Faja da Nogueira hydroelectric power plant.
After this deviation, you should return to the levada that now presents itself without water.Continue along until you find one steep staircase that you need to climb till you find the tunnel towards Faja da Nogueira and where two levadas converge: one has its origin on the Caldeirão Verde and the other on the right, carrying the waters captured in the Caldeirão do Inferno. It is in this levada that you get to the Caldeirão do Inferno. It's only about 1000m but with some sections in tunnels.
This area is a canyon, carved by the waters along a line where the rocks were less resistant.
