A Biblioteca Pública Regional da Madeira (BPR) é um espaço com diferentes ambientes e acervos, de cultura, conhecimento, lazer e de informação, aberto a todos os cidadãos.

The Public Library of Madeira (BPR) is a space with different environments and collections, culture, knowledge, entertainment and information, open to all citizens.

Este é um dos tesouros mais bem escondidos da costa norte da ilha do Porto Santo. O Porto das Salemas é uma pequena e maravilhosa enseada, muito bem escondida mas merecedora de uma visita.

This is one of the best hidden treasures of the north coast of the island of Porto Santo. Porto das Salemas is a wonderful little cove, very well hidden but well worth a visit.





Para descobrirmos o Porto das Salemas devemos ir em direcção à Fonte da Areia, fazendo um pequeno desvio à direita, utilizando uma estrada com poucos anos de existência. O carro deverá ficar estacionado nessa estrada ou então na pequena entrada de terra.

To discover Porto das Salemas you must go towards Fonte da Areia, making a detour to the right, using a road with few years of existence. The car should be parked on that road or into a dirt road.





Para chegarmos ao Porto das Salemas, o mais recomendado é ir a pé pelo trilho que começa aqui:

No entanto, os possuidores de uma moto 4 poderão utilizar esse tipo de veículo para percorrer o trilho. O trilho é bastante íngreme em algumas partes e com alguma pedra solta, pelo que deverão ter algum cuidado ao conduzir por lá.

To reach Porto das Salemas, the most recommendable is to walk along the track that starts here:

However, if you have a Quad, you can use this vehicle to move through the track. This dirt track is quite steep in some parts and with some loose rock, so you should be very careful when driving there.





Ao chegar ao Porto das Salemas poderás tirar algum tempo para observar alguns fenómenos geológicos interessantes.

Upon arriving at Porto of Salemas you can take some time to observe some interesting geological phenomena.





Deverás dentro do possível visitar este sítio com maré baixa, para que possas aproveitar e mergulhar nestas águas límpidas. Com as condições adequadas, formam-se pequenas piscinas naturais deliciosas.

As far as possible you should visit this site with low tide so you can enjoy and dive in these waters. With the right conditions, they form small delightful pools .

O Porto Santo é habitualmente referenciado pela sua bela praia de areia com 9km de comprimento. Muitos dos seus visitantes usufruem dessa praia, chegando a fazer pequenas incursões pelos pontos mais afamados da ilha, como o Pico Castelo, Fonte da Areia, Calheta, etc. No entanto pouca atenção é dada à costa norte da ilha.

Porto Santo is usually referenced by its beautiful sandy beach with 9 km in length. Many visitors enjoy this beach, making small incursions to the most famous sites of the island, such as  Pico Castelo, Fonte da Areia, Calheta, etc .. However little attention is given to the island's north coast. 

A paisagem da costa norte da ilha é completamente diferente do sul. Montanhas agrestes e falésias íngremes que caiem até ao mar, contrastam com a plana praia do sul, mas oferecem vistas absolutamente deslumbrantes e interessantes formações rochosas vulcânicas.

The landscape of the north coast of the island is completely different from the south.Rugged mountains and steep cliffs that fall to the sea, contrast with the flat beach in the south, but offers absolutely stunning views and interesting volcanic rock formations.

Daqui podemos ter uma vista única e soberba, podendo se ver parte da ilha da Madeira, o ilhéu de Ferro, o ilhéu da Fonte da Areia e parte da costa norte do Porto Santo. Um olhar mais atento para as rochas que nos rodeiam, mostra-nos curiosas formas e cores.

Here we have a unique and superb view, being able to see part of the island of Madeira, the Ferro islet, the Fonte da Areia islet and part of the north coast of Porto Santo. A closer look at the rocks that surround us, shows us curious shapes and colors. 

Esta cache poderá ser um pouco mais trabalhosa para quem vier a pé, visto que as estradas existentes na zona são apenas recomendadas a veículos todo o terreno. Para quem possui um veículo adequado, poderá ser quase uma drive-in. Depois poderá vaguear pelos inúmeros caminhos que existem nesta área, usufruindo de uma paisagem única.

This cache may be a little more difficult for those who come on foot, since the existing roads in the area are only recommended for off-road vehicles. For those with a suitable vehicle, this cache may almost be a drive-in. Then you can wander through the many paths that exist in this area, enjoying a unique landscape.

Esta é uma cache de nível 5 de terreno devido à fragilidade do solo, pelo que deverão desconfiar sempre de onde estão a agarrar ou pisar.

O ponto mais alto do Pico do Castelo atinge os 430 metros de altura, encontrando-se quase no topo o busto de homenagem a Schiappa de Azevedo, que contribuiu fortemente para a arborização do monte, outrora mais desertificado, existindo também as ruínas de uma fortaleza do século XVI, símbolo da defesa das populações dos continuados ataques piratas à Ilha, durante conturbados séculos.

 The highest point of Pico Castelo reaches 430 meters in height, lying almost on top is the bust in honor of Schiappa de Azevedo, who contributed greatly to the afforestation of the hill, once more desertified, there are also the ruins of a sixteenth century fortress , a symbol of defense of the people on the island from continued pirate attacks during turbulent centuries.

Faial Prismático

Esta cache irá te conduzir a um fenómeno geológico interessante na foz da Ribeira do Faial. Parte deste fenómeno está inserido na nova zona de lazer aqui construída.

A zona de lazer do Complexo Balnear do Faial, junto à foz da ribeira, conta com um parque para actividades lúdicas. 

This cache will lead you to an interesting geological phenomenon at the mouth of theRibeira do Faial. Part of this phenomenon is inserted in the new recreation area built here.
The leisure area of the Complexo Balnear do Faial, near the mouth of the river, has a park for recreational activities. 




Com uma vasta área verde, o espaço tem uma ciclovia, uma mini pista para bicicletas (para crianças), um parque radical e zonas específicas para a prática de jogos tradicionais madeirenses, entre outros.

O parque de actividades lúdicas está enquadrado entre as margens escarpadas da foz da Ribeira do Faial, das quais se destacam, pelo Norte, as expressivas formações de basalto que sustentam o Morro do Cabrestante e a Sul o início da escarpa montanhosa que contorna a margem direita da ribeira.

With a vast green area, this space has a bike path, a mini bike path (for children), a radical park and specific areas to Madeira's traditional games, among others.

This park is framed between the steep banks of the mouth of the Ribeira do Faial,including most importantly, to the north, the impressive basalt rock formations that hold the Morro do Cabrestante South and the start of the mountain ridge which skirts the right edge of the riverside.

Graças às cotas do terreno, suficientemente altas, esta zona tem o efeito de miradouro sobre o vale, destacando-se a riqueza da vista até ao mar.
Nesta área poderás observar uma interessante estrutura geológica denominada disjunção colunar prismática. 

Thanks to the dimensions of the ground, high enough, this area has the effect of a viewpoint over the valley, especially a very good view to the sea.
In this area you can observe an interesting geological structure called Columnar Jointing.

A formação das colunas prismáticas ocorre durante o arrefecimento da lava expelida por um vulcão. Quando a lava arrefece a tensão provocada pela contracção térmica excede a resistência da rocha à tracção, originando a fracturação. A formação de prismas pentagonais ou hexagonais é motivada pela estabilidade destas geometrias em condições de ruptura de uma superfície. O desenvolvimento das colunas é, regra geral, perpendicular à superfície de arrefecimento. Esta coincide normalmente com o topo ou base da escoada, facto pelo qual a observação de estruturas verticais é bastante comum.

The formation of prismatic columns occurs during cooling of the lava from a volcano. When the lava cools the tension caused by thermal contraction exceeds the tensile strength of the rock, leading to fracturing. The formation of pentagonal or hexagonal prisms is motivated by the stability of these geometries in terms of a rupture surface. The development of the columns is generally perpendicular to the surface cooling. This usually coincides with the top or bottom of the draining area, and for that reason the observation of vertical structures is quite common.
